International women day

Happy International Women day!

I have always being wondering about the need of a special day to celebrate people, roles... as we get overwhelmed by all those special occasions. Soon we will need to celebrate the “nothing special day”.  Sometimes I feel some topics are too important to be just confined to a one day celebration. It should always be running as a background process in our mind.

Nevertheless, it is a great opportunity to pause and reflect of the position of women in the world.  The official United Nations theme for International Women's Day 2013 is "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women."

This is not a topic affecting women in far countries. It is all around us too. According to the United Nations: “7 in 10 women in the world report having experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lifetime.”

Building awareness on such a topic is important! But real changes will be only achieved by a mentality shift and by modifying cultural beliefs. With the French revolution, people were fighting to get freedom and equality. That was more than 200 years ago! It is getting better but we are not there yet. It looks like an onion, every time, you thing you have remove a layer, you discover another one.

IWD is the perfect moment to enhance the role of women across all aspects of society and celebrate the role of women’s economic, political and social achievements.

We have decided to partner with the Women2020 initiative. Our goal is to open dialogue between the political and business world and debate about the contribution of women to achieve the Europe 2020 vision of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. The launch event is today at 12:00.

Today, Cleverland and Professional Women’s International (PWI), the Belgium chapter of EPWN, are proud to launch the call for candidacies for The Female Board Pool Database  in Belgium.

Happy International Women’s day to all
