Back to PWI Magazine - Q1 2015 Edition

    President's Welcome

    Dear PWI members and readers,

I mentioned our new web site in last edition. It is now up and running. Tell us what you think!

I was also referring to the new volunteer’s team. We do already have a new editor in chief: Homeira Kroone. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Homeira and to thank Alessandra for all the work she has done setting up and running the Magazine. She managed to publish over 130 brand new articles in 16 editions of the magazine and we had interviewees and authors from 19 different countries. For her many hundreds of hours were spent in building the magazine and the editorial team. Please join me in thanking her and wishing her every success for the PWI Hotel award project she has started with Irene.

You’ve certainly heard about our Women Friendly Hotel Award. Help us weigh the most important criteria for you! If you have done it, please take the poll here. Please feel free to share the poll with your friends and colleagues. You can find more details about it in the topic of the edition.

On the event side, this year's theme is: Shooting for the stars! New workshops on the topic will be announced shortly. If you have any suggestions, we will welcome them.

Stay tuned for more interesting events like "the forgotten social and emotionl Vertical dimensions" where Jean Debrosse will explain the hidden mechanisms that transform us and make us perceive the world differently as we age. New events will be announced soon, check www.pwi.be/events.

Last month, we had the special event for new members where the different programs offered by PWI were presented, it was a big success. We have welcomed over 25 new or potential members.

Don't forget the next mentoring wave that will start later this year on May 26th.

If you are applying to be a Mentee or a Mentor we need the completed forms as soon as possible, preferably by May 18th.

If you have any suggestions, remarks or are willing to give us a hand, don’t hesitate to contact us at events@pwi.be

I am thrilled to say that thanks to the different calls for board members and the executive we did, we now  have  several new enthusiastic volunteers. We will serve you even better!

Last week, I had the pleasure to present the 2014 results at our General Assembly, an event always important to the life of our association. Thanks again to all the members who attended. On this occasion, 4 new persons were elected to the board: Marie Terese Letorney, Clare Mahon, Irene Personne and Anke Sieg. New roles and responsibilities in the board will be announced before September. In the meantime Alessandra and I will remain on the board for a handover period of a maximum 4 months. The executive team has also expanded with Victoria Kirk’s participation in the mentoring team. We wish all full success in their new roles.

Nevertheless, additional help is always welcome!  Please contact office@pwi.be if you are ready to contribute even a couple of hours per week.  We are looking in particular for a graphic artist (illustrator), a video editor, social Media savvy people, writers for the magazine, ….

    Happy International Women day!

I have always being wondering about the need of a special day to celebrate people, roles... as we get overwhelmed by all those special occasions. Soon we will need to celebrate the “nothing special day”.  Sometimes I feel some topics are too important to be just confined to a one day celebration. It should always be running as a background process in our mind.

Nevertheless, it is a great opportunity to pause and reflect of the position of women in the world.  The official United Nations theme for International Women's Day 2013 is "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women."

This is not a topic affecting women in far countries. It is all around us too. According to the United Nations: “7 in 10 women in the world report having experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lifetime.”

Building awareness on such a topic is important! But real changes will be only achieved by a mentality shift and by modifying cultural beliefs. With the French revolution, people were fighting to get freedom and equality. That was more than 200 years ago! It is getting better but we are not there yet. It looks like an onion, every time, you thing you have remove a layer, you discover another one.

IWD is the perfect moment to enhance the role of women across all aspects of society and celebrate the role of women’s economic, political and social achievements.

We have decided to partner with the Women2020 initiative. Our goal is to open dialogue between the political and business world and debate about the contribution of women to achieve the Europe 2020 vision of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. The launch event is today at 12:00.

Follow the event life at  http://ustre.am/UsbF  and on our twitter account.

Today, Cleverland and Professional Women’s International (PWI), the Belgium chapter of EPWN, are proud to launch the call for candidacies for The Female Board Pool Database  in Belgium.

Happy International Women’s day to all
